Potential

Potential
by Ananke Asseff

One of the most effective means to exercise control of populations in contemporary capitalism is the production of fear.

Citizens adopt new “protection strategies” that modify everyday habits, among other things.

Photography: Portraits of members of middle and upper class civilians, set in their homes and holding a weapon.

Many people, more than we imagine, bear weapons in our society. They are individuals, who based on their appearance or social class are not included in social “patterns” that customarily define who is “suspicious” (physical appearance, nationality, etc.).

Individuals interact on a permanent basis with a firearm for different reasons, the most pressing is perhaps the “lack of safety.”

The lack of safety sustained by that idea is a sort of paranoia. It is a paradox of the lack of safety.
