Conjuntamente con la George Eastman House en Rochester (Nueva York, Estados Unidos) y Zone Zero, tenemos el placer de presentarles estos daguerrotipos coloreador a mano perteneciente a su colección. Como me fue apuntado por Anthony Bannon, director del museo, es muy interesante ver la manera en que el periodismo fue descrito por el jefe de fotografía del Museo de Arte del Condado de Los Ángeles.

Robert Sobieszek, en el libro Masterpieces of Photography From the George Eastman House Collections (Abbeville Press, 1985) p. 48, declaró sobre el daguerrotipo “Incendio en los molinos Ames en Oswego, Nueva York, 1853” de George N. Barnard: “El daguerrotipo de los molinos Ames es un raro ejemplo de periodismo “daguerriano” . A pesar de lo borroso de las llamas y el humo en las imágenes de Barnard la sensibilidad en la aplicación de los pigmentos a conferido a esta fotografía una sensación única de instantaneidad”.

"En una mañana de julio de 1853, comenzó un devastador incendio en la orilla este del río Oswego, Barnard tomó su cámara y sacó por lo menos dos vistas del aterrador espectáculo. La primera fotografía tomada poco después de que descubrió el incendio, se hizo desde el principio de la calle West Cayuga, una cuadra al oriente del nuevo estudio de Barnard que tenía una vista al sureste del río hacia los molinos Ames y Doolittle ." "The second view was taken a short time later from a rooftop position two blocks south of his studio near the head of West Oneida Street, looking northeast. This latter view conveys the extent of the destruction along the riverbank from the center of East Oswego north to the harbor. The small plates in the Eastman House collection are reduced copy daguerreotypes made for public sale from Barnard's larger originals. Since they are 'mirror images' of the originals, laterally reversed daguerreotypes, these smaller plates read correctly. The daguerreotype of the Ames and Doolittle mills is delicately hand-colored, with crimson pigment added to the flaming buildings." [Keith Davis, --George N. Barnard,-- 1990, p. 28-29]
