A masterpiece of information!   I studied photography and right now I'm working for a newspaper agency here in Belgium. I'm interested in photography ever since I was little. Actually, I used to take pictures since I was only five years old. Anyway, I'd like to ask you a question and I really hope you can help me out. A friend of mine wants to make a reportage, far away from home and he asked me to find out how it actually works (to send images from one computer to another) I know a little about image data transfer and I told him, that it's possible to send images with the use of a laptop, connected with a digital camera and modem. But can you tell me a little more about that specificaly or do you know where I can find more resources about this issue on the net (downloadeble tutorials, or so..) My name is Bill Hogan; I've been a professional photographer for over 20 years. Recently I've begun doing some personal digital work which I'd like to find somewhere to show it.   Date: Thu, Apr 8, 1999, 12:53 PM   Dear Pedro, Your editorial, "Eye" examines not only the significance of self-portraits, but suggests that if, as the cliche goes, "the eyes are mirrors of the soul," without the catch lights in your eye, your self-portrait would not be as viable.   Most revealing about those catch lights is that photographers can look at others' work and see how it is lit. How very conscious the industry is of this--so much as to offer reflectors shaped to give specific options for the catch lights. In covers for Vogue, Glamour, etc. models' eyes, we can see the light banks very clearly. In Matthew Rolston's shot for Epson's Photo EX Color Ink Jet Printer color printers, the catch lights--facilitated by sunglasses--are so distinct that they reflect a vertical image of Rolston himself, making the exposure, and the light he is standing before. What's even odder is that Rolston is a human scrim, thereby integrating himself with the shot both technically and figuratively.   Jerry Uelsmann once said "Photography will always have elements of alchemy" (my favorite Uelsmann quote), and your Eye essay intensifies this observation. With your digital photo, as Rolston's, the fact that technology is turning things up a bit--or byte--does not exclude, but invites all the more--the human eye. Cearly, there is no substitute, no matter how mysteriously it works on the brain: our computer, as you say.   The lottery idea for group show announcement images is a great one!   Ivy

887. La fotografía y sus rastros que llevan fuera de Kosovo

    Llevaba dos días caminando, vistiendo la ropa de alguien más, tratando de encontrar un camino que lo sacara de Kosovo cuando se encontró con una fotografía tirada boca arriba a la orilla del camino. Miró, y volvió a mirar el bonito cabello rubio y los ojos azules de la niña sonriente que le devolvía la mirada desde la fotografía arrugada. Era su hija.   Chris Stephen en Morine, Albania recuenta en un artículo para el Evening Standard de Londres cómo, para entonces Bashkim estaba a punto de sufrir un colapso mental. Cuatro días antes paramilitares serbios vestidos con balaclavas negras habían llegado a su pueblo, Krajlan, cerca de la ciudad central kosovar de Klina. Habían reunido a todos, separando a los hombres de las mujeres y los niños, y Bashkim había temido lo peor. Junto con alrededor de otros 500 hombres se les ordenó dirigirse a un campo en las afueras del pueblo y se les dijo que se desvistieran. La ropa de los hombres se apiló en un montón, pero las esperadas ejecuciones jamás ocurrieron. En vez de eso, los hombres pasaron una noche sin dormir desnudos bajo la lluvia, antes de ser divididos en dos grupos. Se apartó a noventa hombres y se los llevaron. Bashkim no tenía idea alguna de lo que les ocurriría. A él, como al resto, se les dijo que se pusieran ropa -cualquier ropa de la enorme y empapada pila- y que se fueran, cosa que hicieron rápidamente. Mientras se alejaban, se oyó el fuego de las ametralladoras desde el lugar hacia donde se había encaminado a los noventa. Bashkim jamás averiguó qué fue lo que les pasó. A la mañana siguiente estaba con otros 150, cansado, hambriento y temeroso de toparse con más paramilitares serbios, cuando se encontró con la fotografía. Un poco más adelante en el sendero, advirtió otra -de su tío- y aún más adelante una de su esposa. Y entonces comprendió. Su esposa, en su desesperación por guiar a su esposo fuera de peligro, había desbaratado el álbum familiar dejando fotografías para marcar un camino que él pudiera seguir que lo sacara del país a donde estuviera a salvo. Pronto otros hombres encontraron fotografías similares en el suelo o atoradas entre las rocas y los arbustos, todas ellas marcando un sendero de papel que acabó llevándolos a la frontera albanesa.     En otro periódico, el Daily Record de Escocia, descubrimos aun otro de los senderos que registra la fotografía en este éxodo masivo de nacionales albaneses. Se nos dice que después de un tortuoso trayecto atravesando el continente, los hombres pensaron que encontrarían asilo cuando emergieran finalmente de su escondite secreto. Pero ayer, los oficiales franceses de la aduana los agarraron en una imagen de rayos-X mientras esperaban dentro de un lorry (camión) el arribo de un tren de carga del Canal en Calais.   En un caso tenemos el ingenio de los humanos usando las fotografías en un gesto casi de cuento de hadas al dejar un rastro de fotos en medio de la región de los Balcanes asolada por la guerra; en el otro caso tenemos imagénes de rayos-X de alta tecnología hechas de un camión entero para detectar la presencia de seres humanos escondidos entre la carga de mercancías. Es extraño cómo la fotografía se encuentra en el corazón de ambas historias. Las imágenes nos acompañan en todas partes en estas guerras: las encontramos en los monitores que utilizan los pilotos para observar lo que van a bombardear abajo, en la tierra, a 15 000 pies , o en el noticiero televisivo que reporta estos mismos acontecimientos. Las fotografías son usadas por la institución militar para confirmar que sus misiones han sido llevadas a cabo. La industria noticiosa emplea imágenes para comunicar al público lo que está sucediendo. Se toman fotografías de los refugiados para sus papeles de identificación. Pero todo esto mal que bien ya lo sabemos, sin embargo, lo que me pareció bastante diferente y sorprendente esta vez fue el haber recibido un correo electrónico de alguien en Macedonia, lugar que está en medio de la región de los Balcanes asolada por la guerra, comentándome, mientras veía fotografías, su visita a ZoneZero     ---------- From: igor kocoski To: support@zonezero.com Subject: saludos Date: Fri, Apr 9, 1999, 5:03 PM   Ya leí su revista. Digno de mencionarse, debido al internet tenemos hoy en día accceso a un sitio dentro de Serbia (Yugoslavia). http://www.inet.co.yu/ No sabemos quién está colocando estas páginas que contienen el lado Serbio de la historia, pero por encima de todo, encontramos que estas fotografias mayormente no vistas o publicadas en Occidente, son por sí mismas una fuente de información muy importante.   De nueva cuenta podemos apreciar como la fotografía tiene ese don de la ubiquidad, y como a pesar de los bombardeos, de los apagones, el internet sigue enviando mensajes que nos mantienen informados y así lograr una mejor comprensión de todo lo que ocurre en la medida que buscamos más información de fuentes diversas y de todo tipo de tendencias.         http://zonezero.com/editorial/abril99/aprilsp.html

  Date: Sun, Mar 14, 1999, 3:13 AM   Despues de una jornada larga de fotografia comercial decidi prender la computadora y observar nuevamente la pantalla. Hace un tiempo que no llegaba al lugar adecuado para estimular mi mente con algunas imagenes que me pudieran motivar a encontrar de la vereda que se ha caminado antes.   Me encontre con un ojo y decidi mirar que habia detras de la editorial de Zone Zero. Pedro los comentarios que encontre me tocaron profundamente ya que desde hace varios meses he tratado de buscar imagenes para plasmarlas en mi camara creativa. He analizado mis alrededor inmediato y el distante. Trabajamos viendo siempre al exterior pero hasta hoy comprendi que no habia visto el ojo interno de Walter que ha estado cerrado por no detenerse y observar su retrato interno.   Vaya que es muy cierto de que es importante verce en el espejo del alma para ver quien realmente es uno y cuestionarse ! en que punto del camio Me encuentro!   ! se me han agotado las posibilidades de observacion, o estoy en una contamplacion pasiva y conformista por la vertiginocidad de la vida de la ciudad Espacial. Tus comentarios y sobre el ojo me han agradado bastante y mas que agradarme me pusieron nuevamente en el pedestal de observacion de uno mismo para examinarce y encontrar que seguimos siendo un constante descubrimiento de nuestro mundo pero que me he dejado atapar por las circunstancias externas y no detenerme a ver lo que realmente necesito mirar. El interior de mi sencibilidad para sacarla a flote y expander mas este talento que Dios me ha otorgado.   Saludos desde la Ciudad Espacial Pedro Te mando un abrazo. Walter.

  Date: Sat, Mar 13, 1999, 8:51 PM   In your editorial, you describe the pupil of the eye as a lens, "fat or thin".   Just a friendly correction from this retired ophthalmologist who greatly admires your work and web sites: The pupil of the eye is the aperture in the center of the (colored) iris, which acts just like the iris diaphragm in the camera, to control the amount of light reaching the retina. The eye has two lenses: The more powerful, fixed-power lens is the cornea, the curved clear window at the front of the eye. Behind the iris (and pupil) is the weaker, but variable crystalline lens, which changes thickness to change focus until you're over fifty. After that we need bifocals.   Your insights of the essential relationship between the eye, human vision, and photography are appreciated.   Just one technical question: do you have any recommendations as to the quality of the various 35 mm films scanners currently available?
